Note from the Playwright

I truly believed mid-life would be a time in my life where I’d be thriving, but I somehow missed the memo on the crash-landing of second puberty. “Things I Shouldn’t Tell You” is a call to action for trumpeting our truths on topics too often considered faux pas, shameful or vulgar. It’s followed by a talkback— an invitation to be real together, to share both our trials and triumphs, and maybe, even vent a little!

About the Play

Known for her sharp wit and fearless performances, Shannan shares stories about her life, including the benefits of a magical mistress, a quick-fix vibrator, and a masterclass in plucking chin hairs, as she navigates the trials and triumphs of being a woman smack in the middle. “She’s a national treasure.” – CBC

I laughed. I cried. I peed a little.”

“I could not stop thinking about this body of work. I thought about it all night and did not want to cleanse my palate of if.”

“Best roller coaster I’ve ever been on. Vulnerable, beautiful, and f#$%ing hilarious.”

SkirtsAfire respectfully acknowledges that we are telling stories on the traditional and ancestral homeland of diverse Indigenous peoples including Nehiyawak (Cree), Metis, Inuit, Dene, Blackfoot, Saulteaux and Nakota Sioux, who have lived and travelled through this place thousands of years before us. We are all treaty people and as settlers to Treaty 6 Territory, which is also home to Métis Settlements and the Métis Nation of Alberta, we are striving to better listen, understand and learn from the Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing. We respect and celebrate the languages, history and culture of the First Nations, Metis and Inuit whose presence continues to enrich this vibrant community here in ᐊᒥᐢᑲᐧᒋᐋᐧᐢᑲᐦᐃᑲᐣ, Amiskwacîwâskahikan, also known as Edmonton, and at SkirtsAfire.
