🔥 Festival Recap: The Shoe Project 🔥 The Shoe Pro 🔥 Festival Recap: The Shoe Project 🔥

The Shoe Project 2026 brought together immigrant and refugee women to share their personal journeys to Edmonton, each story rooted in a single pair of shoes.

Thank you to this year’s participants for their honesty, courage, and generosity in sharing such powerful experiences, and to our audiences for showing up with such care. ❤️

We’re also so grateful to our ASL Interpreters, @xoamorenaxo and @jenniwithani, for helping make these stories accessible to more members of our community.

Thank you to our Venue Sponsor: YWCA Edmonton!

The Shoe Project is presented by SkirtsAfire in partnership with @ywca_edmonton, with support from @workshopwest, who first brought this initiative to Edmonton.

🌟 Thank you to our Sponsors and Supporters: @ywcacanada, @kunitz_shoes, Allard Foundation, @bffoundationyeg, and @beetogether.ca 🌟

🔥 Thank you, Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market! 🔥 We 🔥 Thank you, Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market! 🔥

We’re so grateful to @strathconamarket for their generous support of SkirtsAfire, and for the delicious catering at our post-show reception for I am Eagle by Matricia Bauer (@indiginizingtheworld).

In the lead-up to the Festival, Matricia even stopped by the Market with Hawk (a puppet from the show, designed and built by Jessica Hickman @mixed.media.monsters), and it was such a joy to see the curiosity and delight from everyone who encountered them. 🦅

SkirtsAfire respectfully acknowledges that we are telling stories on the traditional and ancestral homeland of diverse Indigenous peoples including Nehiyawak (Cree), Metis, Inuit, Dene, Blackfoot, Saulteaux and Nakota Sioux, who have lived and travelled through this place thousands of years before us. We are all treaty people and as settlers to Treaty 6 Territory, which is also home to Métis Settlements and the Métis Nation of Alberta, we are striving to better listen, understand and learn from the Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing. We respect and celebrate the languages, history and culture of the First Nations, Metis and Inuit whose presence continues to enrich this vibrant community here in ᐊᒥᐢᑲᐧᒋᐋᐧᐢᑲᐦᐃᑲᐣ, Amiskwacîwâskahikan, also known as Edmonton, and at SkirtsAfire.
