Artist statement
From Shadows to Light is a deeply personal exploration of memory, identity, and growth. In this work, I gather items that brought me joy and comfort during my youth—a time marked by undiagnosed neurodivergence and the weight of blatant homophobia while attending an all-girls school. These objects, once hidden within my inner world, are juxtaposed with imagery of my adult self living authentically and loving who I am.
As an educator, I witness young people navigating similar struggles. I can’t go back and tell my younger self what I know now, but I can share my love, experience, and hope with the youth I support. This interactive installation invites participants to engage with the collected ephemera, add a message to their younger selves, create their own compositions and shadows, and capture the moment through photographs or videos—a reflection of their own journey from shadows into light.
