The A&N Experience

Days That Shattered My Heart (2020) is an audio-visual representation of grief ritualized during the pandemic while grieving in isolation. The 12 minute 8 seconds audio is “The Ritual”, in which each day of the year is represented by two seconds, and a piece of glassware representing a loved one is dropped at the time stamp for the date they died. Photography of “The Ritual” was taken by Joshua Bookhalter. From the shattered glass, the tank display materialized from the need for something physical to juxtapose the gaping invisible holes left by grief. This installation is “The Meditation”, a reflection of grief through sound, poetry, and visual art. 

Yvonne Boon is a musician and artist in Edmonton. In the past year, Yvonne has been experimenting with using multiple mediums to create art.

Joshua Bookhalter’s primary medium was photography, based in film formats. His photography focused on a range of subjects, from portraiture to landscape, but with an eye for capturing an emotion particular to each scene. He also had a background in composing and recording music, with his own compositions having an ethereal, ambient, quality to them.

Myself, the seeds and customs of my people has changed the face and function of this land Treaty 6, Amiskwaciwâskahikan / ᐊᒥᐢᑲᐧᒋᐋᐧᐢᑲᐦᐃᑲᐣ. Though I was born here I have much to learn about the history and people whose lands these are and those who have settled here, so come and let us talk and mend the holes in my cloth.

The main focus of BIPOwer is to celebrate BIPOC women, while simultaneously bearing in mind the obscene misrepresentation and under-representation of people of colour in the arts industry.
