The History of our Skirt Designs
The first skirt was designed and built for SkirtsAfire in 2013. It became the Official Skirt that year, and was proudly featured in the Nina Art Gallery for the duration of the programming. In 2014, we opened up the Official Skirt design as a competition in order to expand and allow for the ability to showcase more than one designer each year.
Skirt Design Challenge 2022
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were excited to partner with the Old Strathcona Business Association and their local businesses to display our Skirt Designs around Whyte Avenue in our 2021 Reimagined festival last March. We are thrilled to continue with the success of displaying the designs in storefronts in 2022. This time though, we are dropping the competition part of the Skirt Designs. Instead, we chose 9 local artists to be a part of creating a full window display at 1 of 4 participating Old Strathcona retailers, with an up-cycled skirt as the centrepiece. The Skirt designer’s challenge will be to design a piece using up-cycled waste materials that the retailers provide (cardboard, plastics, and other materials that would normally end up in the landfill).
The theme for this year’s displays is: 4 Directions and each window display will have a color: red, white, blue or yellow. Visit all 4 and see how the same upcycled materials were used in 4 directions by 4 different artists.
“Four Directions Skirts Challenge” is about life coming together from all directions to create a visual that will inspire the viewer to see things in a new light. My goal is to ignite a spark, and to create a beginning out of an otherwise discarded person place or thing. There is beauty in second chances, if only we weren’t so quick to toss away. Let’s look around, let’s see what we already have to create with, and who we have to learn from, let’s elevate our standard of living for everyone from all directions. – Kim Neeser, Skirt Design Coordinator
