Deep Fried Curried Perogies

What are Deep Fried Curried Perogies?

Well, if Germans are “krauts” and the British are “Spotted dick”, then Deep Fried Curried Perogies are born when a Jamaican Filipino and a Ukrainian Brit start a family (or a Jalipinukranibritinadian). In this feisty, comedic memoir, Michelle Todd shares the past of her Filipino mother and Jamaican father who left their tropic homelands behind to spice up the wonderful non-tropic world of Edmonton, Alberta. This Fringe hit recounts what their collection plate of stories, recipes, heirlooms and hair trauma mean for Michelle and her baby’s future. An exploration of the question, “Where do I come from?” Touching, funny, and smart – Deep Fried Curried Perogies is a real look at family legacy.

Poly Queer Love Ballad

Sara Vickruck and Anais West in Poly Queer Love Ballad. Photo by Emily Cooper.Poly Queer Love Ballad is a bold, intimate new musical, merging slam poetry with catchy pop-folk tunes. Nina, a polyamorous bisexual poet, meets Gabbie, a monogamous lesbian songwriter, at an open mic night. With two microphones, a loop pedal, and array of instruments, they struggle to reconcile their fierce mutual attraction with their opposing perspectives on love. The show challenges conceptions about polyamory and queerness, while aiming to create a new representation of intimacy that isn’t confined by genre, medium, or societal obligations.

After playing to sold out houses at the 2018 Vancouver Fringe Festival and winning multiple awards, Poly Queer Love Ballad was picked up by the Queer Arts Festival, in partnership with Zee Zee Theatre and the Frank Theatre Company.

Statue

Statue is a silent narrative using music and imagery. Two people come upon a nude female bust and lend it an article of clothing. The statue comes to life, borrowing their body parts, as she ekes out an identity by observing the actors model stereotyped behavior, which she emulates. Through physical play and an exchange of shoes, the puppet grapples with what is “appropriate” for “male/female.”
