Additional Information:
Auditions will be in person pending Covid-19 numbers and restrictions in Alberta in early July and will include movement and dance. If we cannot be in person, auditions will be over Zoom. Zoom and/or Taped auditions will also be accepted for those who are out of town performers. SkirtsAfire is a theatre and multi-disciplinary arts festival that features the work of women. 2022 marks the 10th Anniversary of the festival.

Synopsis of Ayita
Ayita is a calling back to one’s spirit and voice. It is a modern-day creation story meets Indigenous realities that are told through text and movement. This show is a fusion of theatre and Indigenous contemporary dance. Following three generations of Cree women, Niska, Ayita, and young Ayita. Each in a different cycle of their womanhood yet seamlessly interconnected to one another. These women navigate through their own stories of sovereignty, breaking free from and transcending past personal pain, stepping into their healing and liberation, awakening to their medicine.

CHARACTERS/PERFORMERS

Niska – Older generation, wise, fluid, a survivor. 40 years or older. Should be comfortable moving physically through space

Ayita – Already cast

Young Ayita – Younger generation, a youth. 18-27 years old. Should be comfortable moving physically through space

Chorus of 4 dancers – Any age 18 or older. Will also use their voices – must be comfortable speaking on their own and as a chorus.

This production will be an ITA CAEA contract (G House) with 6 weeks for rehearsal and performance. Actors must be available full time for rehearsals from February 1 to March 2, and performances March 2 to March 13, 2022.
